Gummies Bush

Gummies Bush Farming locality 10 km on the west side of the Aparima River, 9 km north of Riverton, 18 km south from Otautau. Said to be named after whaler and later pig-farmer James Leader, nicknamed ‘Gummie’ because he had no teeth, who had a camp in the bush here.〔''Wises New Zealand Guide'' Wises Publications Limited, Auckland 1987〕 To the Maori the area was known as Opuaki. Apparently named after a person, Puaki, a word which means "to come forth in position," or "to come forth in language - that is to utter.〔Maori Place-names of Otago'' Author 1944. p 60〕
